Study Time
Can you drink while studying?
- No. That sounds like a terrible idea.
- I don’t think it would help you retain any information at all.
- I find it makes you sleepy.
- No matter how ready you are, drinking before an exam is not a good idea.
- Drink AFTER midterms.
- One or two beer. If you go more than that, you may as well go out.
- A glass of wine is fine, but just ONE.
- Sometimes going out and grabbing a beer just to take your mind off things can help, but in moderation.
Study Tips.
- Re-write your notes, highlighting — active studying.
- Sometimes ask the professor what format the exam is going to be.
- Keep a different notebook for each subject.
- Use WebCT in case you miss a class.
- I’m a firm believer in staying at the library until it closes, because then you can go out!
- Study every day. Don’t cram. Keep up with your readings.
- Some textbooks have websites with practice exams.
- Going to class is important.
- Study groups are key. Discussing or explaining things to others can help you retain that information.
Can you study with a hangover?
- Not effectively.
- The next morning is pretty much shot, but later in the afternoon you can get some work done.
- I try to go out on Friday nights, but have a relatively quiet Saturday night so you can work on Sunday.
- I’ve done it, but the marks usually reflect it.
- It’s not a good idea.
Choosing the right prof and course.
- Pick a prof that doesn’t mind you asking questions or is very willing to help.
- Someone you can relate to helps a lot.
- You have profs that are counting the days until they retire.
- If you have a crappy prof, tell your friends not to take them.
- Every prof has a different style. You may hate one but your friend may love him.
- Shop around. Go attend a class before you register. Talk to your friends. Visit www.ratemyprofessors.com.
- Some classes fill up right away because everybody wants to take it.
- Sometimes just emailing the prof to get into a class helps.
Getting the most from your prof.
- The benefit of Mt. A is you get to know your
professors.
- You need to go visit them or email them if you have a question.
- Let them know who you are and that you’re
there to do the work and you’re interested.
- Develop a rapport.
- Don’t be shy. They’re very approachable.
- Profs respect students that invest as much
into the class as they do.
- Go to class. The worst thing you can do is
skip a class.
- Use your professors as a resource.
- On the plus side, later on, if you need a reference, those profs will be there for you if they know you.
