STU Survival Guide

Campus Life

Adjusting to university life.

  • Remember that you’re responsible for yourself.
  • Know yourself.
  • No one is going to baby sit you in class.
  • You end up finding where you fit.
  • Go with the flow.
  • You’re going to make mistakes, but you need to take the good out of those experiences.
  • Don’t be a number be a face in the crowd.
  • Try not to be overwhelmed.
  • Try things (but in a smart way)
  • Take responsibility for your actions and for what you want to do.

What’s the best thing about Mt. A?

  • It’s comfortable, nobody’s under pressure.
  • The people. It’s like a support system.
  • It’s small and personable.
  • You’re not frowned upon for going to class in your pyjamas.
  • The profs are really approachable.
  • The academics are among the best in the country. You have opportunities to do research right out of first year.

Is it okay not to drink?

  • It’s no big deal.
  • People are cool about it.
  • You can have a good time without it. When you remember everything, it’s better.
  • You really have to feel comfortable with what you’re doing. If you don’t feel like drinking, don’t do it

How do you tell someone they’ve had enough?

  • Tell them “You are cut off”.
  • Try to get them out of the situation, take care of them.
  • Get their friends to get them out of there.
  • The monitors can take care of it for you, all you need to do is point it out.
  • Tell the bartender to stop serving them.
  • Just let them know that you’re doing this because you’re their friend.

What events are not to be missed?

  • Orientation
  • The first week is intense because everything is new.
  • Go to Sack Vegas
  • Meal hall turns into a crazy dance floor
  • The A-lympics are a blast.
  • Every house on campus has a huge party
  • Initiation — may sound lame or scary but it’s really a lot of fun.
  • If there’s something you don’t want to do, that’s fine but come out and watch.

Living on (or near) campus.

  • Don’t piss off your RAs
  • Keep your door open. It’s a great way to meet people.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. People are around to help you out.
  • Shower shoes are a must.
  • Living with a good friend is a risk because you could end up ruining that friendship.
  • Have that random roommate. You meet their friends, they meet your friends. It’s awesome.
  • Mix it up. Live with guys and girls. It really changes the dynamic. (Some people disagree).
  • Be respectful towards your roommate.
  • Also respect people’s relaxation habits, because usually you can’t do that anywhere else but your room.
  • Act how you’d like to be treated.

Things to do in Sackville.

  • On Tuesday nights, Joey’s has an all you can eat, then after there’s a movie that is $5.
